So i made this apple tart the other day however my slices came out of the pie dish not so much this [> as this &$!%#. Making the crust out of dates and walnuts has never been attempted in my kitchen before so there was some error but as a crumble over vanilla ice cream is just grand and since there is no added stick of butter and flour -no guilt either ;)

After breakin my butt during spinning class and pilates, what is the best way to imediately replace all those spent calories??

Oskar and I were culinarily delighted with this dish.
Recipe from What Did You Eat?
Was my first time making artichokes. After boiling them, the chokes got to sit for 2 hours while i went to the gym. Which made stuffing them super easy since they were no longer burning hot. Dicing up shrimp is hard so mine had quite the rustic quality. I need to figure out a better dipping sauce for the chokes since the breading tends to dry ones mouth out quickly...but oskar and i werent slowed down by this a bit.

i have gone from hours seraching for exercise tips to diet and nutrition and have seguewayed into organic and healthy living which has stirred up my 15 year old environmental club self again. After reading the entire backlog of Green as a Thistle and making daily trips to No Impact Man and Tiny Choices, i have implemented a few ideas into my daily life.
1)No more plastic bags -in fact i bring my adorable Miso Pretty shopper to Safeway, traders Joes, the gym and the farmers market. I have justified spending money on it since Safeway gives me back 3 cents everytime. (at this rate i only have to go 430 more times to pay it off). Currently my coffee is free trade, my yogurt organic and as much as my fruit local and in season.
2)I took the time to research all the materials Santa Clara will pick up for recycling so on top of the newspaper, there is now a paperbag filled with egg cartons, junk mail, receipts and cereal boxes each week.
3) i have a compost heap!
4) I am trying to reduce and simplify my possessions, giving away stuff just sitting in my closet to whoever i think can actually use it, making an effort to use (up) whatever i already own, and am trying to control my impulse to purchase, purchase, purchase. Doing pretty well with part A and B but THIS gives me a D+ for the last bit.
5) Dishwasher is now premanently set to air dry, will be picking up dryer balls to reduce the time/energy/need for cancer-ific dryer sheets, and all appliances, lights, electronics (def the phone charger) not used on a daily basis are unplugged.

i know i still have a ways to go still -using tons of chemically awful products, driving a truck around and using too much energy for one person. Hopefully i can keep reducing my impact while still staying Fabulous ;)

Something worth blogging about... I have tried and tried to get into the GO -International designs at Target and after failing with 6 or so in the series. Target has finally featured one that i tried almost every item on in my size. I bought this Libertine dress and the best part is that even though i am not the size 2 that is featured here-it looks the same on my body. You can't see but there is also a Black embroidered "L" by the hip. And I do just adore items with my initial/name/head shot on them even though totally unintentional by the designer yeah there is a bit of boob flattening but pretty much every bra of mine is padded to turn my B-s* into C+s

*Among a certain group of friends it is customary to nickname the breasts-as yet I have avoided this but I think I need to christen them Siegfried & Roy since with all this exercising of late they are totally pulling a disappearing act.

Whats more annoying than having a friend who bugs you to update your myspace page?? Why actually doing it of course. As soon as pictures start not loading and code isn't working it becomes sooo obvious why i can never really be a fan of mySpace. I tried -for hours i tried but it still looks like crap-o-rama.
Just the basics of getting it set up and looking halfway decent has never been something i have been able to master... and when the one person in your life who you have depended on to guide you though all this has suddenly turned their backs -i find myself adrift in a sea of icons that shimmer and spam ads and desperate add friend submissions.
Yah i know blogger can be a butthole too but it is the butthole i have come to know and love. Really is one of the longest lasting relationships of my Life.

How do you make an evening commute home in traffic terrifically awesome??
Apparently all it takes is a turquoise low rider because this had me in joy and rapture the whole trek home.
By itself it was pretty glorious quite the stand out among the silver compacts and tasteful SUVs, but what had me squealing in utter delight was when it hit its switches and i got a front row seat to hydralics in action. Pure poetry.
All my previous exposure to this has been Downtown San Jose on a Saturday night with a gang of guys giving every female the once,twice and thrice over while asking. "Where the party at?? COooome on girl .. where ya goin'? Hey Hey dont walk away..." Pulled from this cheezy setting and placed smack into the boring routine commute, the lowrider has become a beloved spectacle. I am living in anticipation of my next business district lowrider sighting.

For the past several days i have been busting my ass repainting my family room. Have a new appreciation for DIF wallpaper remover (could NOT have gotten anywhere without it). I am stubbornly sticking to applying a tone on tone stripe to the walls mostly because i really enjoy telling me people about my tone on tone technique like a snobby interior designer i hope to be someday.
Now i only have to invest the GDP of a small country to update the current furniture (faded out blue couch and white chest picked up from a junk pile) and decor (parking for Polish only signs) up to date with the fabulous new walls (peacock feather blue green btw)

First ever restaurant review. Nice way to kick off summer.
I work on the edge of Menlo Park and often end up in downtown Palo Alto for lunch. On friday, I ended up at the Peninsula Creamery (Retro diner place -since 1988!)
Since i was by my lonesome I sat at the counter which offered me a great view of the servers scooping ALL of the breakfast jam back into a large container. With images of people double-dipping the marmalade and licking knives, I have VOWED to never eat jam from one of those containers again (change that again to once since upon reflection I have never actually used jelly from lil serving containers, prepackaged smuckers yessss but that is a totally different story). I ordered a burger and fries since that is what you do at these places and an extra thick coffee milk shake since that is what I do at these places. Pretty standard burger, nice hand cut fries but fries are fries.Total $16 -i felt that was just a lil too much even for downtown Palo Alto (and had one of the worst 6 seconds of panic when i realized id and atm card where at home on carpet where i threw them after fratellis concert-thanks you back up Visa). Over all the best thing was the 25 cent tootsie pop I picked up on the way out (two words: Indian star)

Excuses excuses.....between a summer cold and huge business plan due for school i have just been MIA. I know pathetic to abandon my 3 loyal readers but I had to use all my "free" work time researching bookkeeper fees and Palo Alto demographics and once I woke up from that homework coma, it was time to jet outta work.
"Well", you say," why don't you stay later and blog???"
shhhhh baby shush momma can't understand you when speak such craziness.
But let's not bring up old shit. Time to focus on the now. And right now is looking pretty good (and by "right now" I mean my foxy lil bod) nothing like illness to shed a couple of pounds and since I still have a fever I am prancing around the office in a black tank (just imagine Rachel hunter in her prime= me minus like 6 inches and about an inch of roots showing under highlights). I figure I need to document this moment as much as possible since once I return to my full strength, my new fav snack Caribou Coffee granola bars will be consumed faster than swifts chickens can fly and I will be back to my fighting weight.

you must be in someone else's house.
I am about to throw in the handywoman towel, hang up the toolbelt and spend the rest of my free time drinking beer in front of the tv while the house falls down around me.
Whats one tiny little broken garbage disposal. Really insignificant not even worth being embarrassed about. So the kitchen sink backs up and since this has been on the to fix list for about 2 months. It is almost like a new pet that we have to care for and tend to.
So fifteen feet away from a sink that wont drain is a water heater that yearns to be a faucet. Tricky bastard has started leaking and after about a week it totally stopped. Lesson learned: water heaters are not like paper cuts or having the flu -no such thing as self healing in the appliance world. Leak is back with a vengance. My new evening routine is to drag the sopping wet towels from around it out to the backyard to dry off and lay out new ones to soak up the slooooow leak from it. nothing but a life of glamour for me.
did you feel that earthquake on sunday?? me either. my sister mentioned it to me once i got home. Didnt give it any thought until the next night when i get home to hear about the leaking toilet. Piddling lil 4.2 quake had caused 2 cracks in the corners of the toilet tank....and a massive puddle on the floor.(this is where i stomped up and down and let out a couple of shit fuck shitty fucks)
Am beginning to see the charm of a house without running water...
Thank god my brother is out of school for a while and can attend to all these repairs. Fingers crossed that this weekend everything will get replaced and that Home Depot is having a memorial day lets give Laura a break sale.

Am most annoyed about all this home mantainence crap since i would rather be putting my energies towards replacing the awful flickering kitchen lights and stripping out the faded wallpaper in the tv room. Le sigh at least the fridge is still chilling my emergancy supply of comfort beer.

what do you get when you combine mad culinary skill with the food palette of a 6 yr old??
THE BEST DAMN BREAKFAST BURRITO EVER!
I made this masterpiece last night and just have to share it with the world...
started out as most of my breakfast burritos do:
tater tots in oven
giant flour tortilla with sharp cheddar cheese
and this is where the a stroke of genius took over. When i was foraging in the fridge for onion i cam across some spicy italian sausage left over from pizzza making adventure.
i decided to pursue my first instinct of "damn this would be awesome in my burrito"
decased and cut into chunks it went into the pan...as it was sizzling away i had a major dilemma: cook onion and eggs in same pan or get a new one????
really the answer was obvious:
When life gives you spicy italian sausage grease, make fried eggs
Now this is where technique and practice really pay off
after sausage was put on top of the cheese and once the eggs were added with a liberal amount of peppar and salt -burrito had to be wrapped a lil while the tots finished cooking
(Ugly Betty break)ohh oven buzzzzzzerrrr!
slapped tots into burrito and doused with the Queen of Condiments Le Ketchup
and we all know that the meals which you cant put down once you start for fear that the whole thing will explode apart are truly the very best meals
i am still in glee of how awesome/disgusting this was and i keep reminding myself that i do have one more ital sausage in fridge...

I sometimes wish someone was sitting next to me taking dictation of the frantic phone calls i recieve from my younger sister when i am at work.
this was the gist of yesterdays...

TP: Laaaaaauraaaaa
(from the exaggerated pronounciation of my name i smell something is up)
Me: what is it?
TP: ummmmm I think my flight leaves tonight.....(as in monday night)
(internal groan -the number of times i have heard her say she leaves late tues early weds i thought she actually knew what she was talking about)

After some discussion we agree that yessss 12:something or other AM def means mon night.

TP: why do i always mess this up??
Me: i dont know
TP: more incoherent whining noises I guess i will try and change the flight

After a bit she calls back
TP: I cant change the flight
Me: well then get the tomorrow off work. Can you do that??
TP: yessssss

and this is the point were i KNOW she is calling for me to do the big sister thing. Her lil head has gotten overwhelmed by this one snag and now she is in the beginning of slight panic mode.....

Me: Call your friend and let her know. Leave a message with her Mom, see if you can get the hostel info, call about your rides, double check when you are getting back, have you packed yet?? go home at lunch and back...
TP: okaaaaaay
Me: I have no sympathy for you about this. You do this every time.
TP: I know (exboyfriend) used to take care of this
Me: well obviously he isnt around anymore and this is really your responsibility
TP: i know i know
Me: You need to realize that you are bad at this and make a better effort to confirm the actual time fo your flights

Seriously the number of phone calls where i end up being a walking moral to an afterschool special.

This is for the 9yr old stuck inside the 25yr old Test Piggys body... the one in charge of flight info and remembering bad TV from out youth.

Had the most awful awkward moment with my coworkers yesterday.
After having a lil company lunch at the Chilis, I was driving us all back over the bridge. I was in a blissful state, basking in the glory of the BEST damn awesome blossom i had ever had when one of my coworkers starts taking about the posh new shuttles she takes between campuses. The are pimped out with TVS and shit and Oprah was on the other day....with a woman whos husband videotaped beating the crap out of her. And if that wasnt awful enough coworker then goes on to say "i grew up with that no way am i going to put up with it now"
(uncomfortable silence for next two minutes)
"sooooo how many kids does (our supervisor) have???" that was the best new topic i could come up with.

Moral of this episode: turn radio too loud for casual conversation once co-workers are drunk on burgers and fries.

Headed to Downtown Palo Alto for lunch and after cruising down the traffic mobbed University street, I was thrilled to turn a corner and BAM pullin parallel parking! what LUCK i thought no reversing and angling crap and even better i can make a speedy get-away should the batsignal go off. with high spirits i was off to lunch.
(flash forward an hour)

As i am prancing back to my car after the best meal ever (author reserves the right for literary exaggeration), I happen to notice that there is a car behind mine now. A car where there isnt even a spot technically. And as i walk around to the driver side i can help but not "gosh they are awfully close to me" and as i take the 5 steps to the back of my car these thoughts have become more aggresive more like "Fucker is TOUCHING MY CAR!!!"

With my temper brewing i walk over to the light blue car molesting my sweet ride and ball my hand into a fist (in my head i smashed it through the window) put i rapped to get the old white guy's attention.

Old white guy "Drrrr"
ME: "Hey that's my car." pointing at my car
OWG: "Drrrrr"
ME: "I have to get out"
OWG:"Drrrr... You want me to back up my car?? Drrrrr"
ME: "Yeah that would be nice since you are smack against it"

This ad makes it all clear why my parents fell prey to a blue and cream beauty with Naugahyde seats, windows that only opened by popping a latch to expose a 3 inch gap for fresh air and double passenger doors that resulted in several amateur attempts at limb amputation. This was what i learned to drive on. Best moment of my learning permit was cruising around the suburbs with my mom and we are being followed by some sort of sedan car. My mom makes me pull over and all 5 feet of her goes to confront whoever had been following us for ten minutes. Turns out is was some shleppy housewife concerned that we were casing the area for burglaries. CHuh as if! Our van had a good 6 extra standard windows before it qualified as a rape-mobile.

Only a van of such majesty and prestige could possibly top the family car before it. The mysterious and swift AMC Hornet (in light blue as shown no less)

While wikipedia points out that the hornet was the first car to have a luxury trim package by a fashion designer, the only custom feature ours had was a broken heater that blasted out by the feet. Was pure delight after being picked up from swim practice and chauffeured home to whatever hamburger meat meal my mother had prepared with love and cauliflower for us.

After some sort of engine part broke the family hornet was sold to a neighbor for $1. My dad was proud of his 75 cent profit.

I have this dynamite new red patent leather bag. It is just the symbol of fierceness among my moc-croc and pleather purses. And they really do deserve a pair of shoes to keep it company on its outings.
I was thinking of getting a pair of black because red purse with red shoes is just tooo cutesy for my tastes. I realize that the stores are pratically vomiting out patent leather shoes these days but I have some particular demands for the ones to be privledged enough to grace my 8 1/2s. I want something more that a pump with a peep toe and as much as i LURVE my new bag i do not have delusions about it being a long term or steady relationship so these shoes have to be on the lower end of the expense spectrum.
As a savvy shopper of the new millenium I am doing my research and have uncovered some treasures and some dreams, some possibilities and some things that could only be malicious jokes on some cobblers part to fool and embarrass on unsuspecting consumer.

I never realized how difficult and frustrating it was spending time researching, writing inserting pics etc in this blog until i was no longer killing time and getting paid for it And like a well loved library book my job has been renewed and I am back at once again. No doubt the toughest part about returning to gainful employment (other than the midday TLC what not to wear cravings) will be having to stretch my brains and energies to fill up the 5+ free hours of one-on-one time with my computer. Blogger and I have just NOT been getting along very well lately! We are not talking divorce and we both still love you very much but blogger is going to go live out of a motel 6 for awhile.

Sooo did anyone else catch the premiere of Top Design on Bravo last night?? which aired at 11 for some shitty reason --there is quite the television chasm of worthlessness on weds from 9-11 actually went and read *gasp* a book until it came on. Obvs the same people who produce Project Runway are in charge of this show soo the formula of focusing on the winners and losers throughout made it soooo obvs who was going and who was staying. I know i will watch every episode but it just wont hold a firm grasp on my heart like Tim and Heidi. But if you combine the two it does come close the to (HIGHLIGHT) guest judge and unbeknownst client for the design -Alexis Arquette.

Look at her being such a serious judge -all sitting on stuff with a clipboard -Judicial GENIUS!!!

Doesn't her face just say "Yeah I KNOW totally Genius!"

It cannot be denied that She really is the top design of the show so far.

New Years Resolutions

I have a looong list of shit i need to get together in my life (before the end of January) so i thought i should have some mini successes by making the new years resolutions on the easy side.
#1. Watch every episode of Top Design on Bravo
#2. Finish entire box of Cheez-itz
#3. Kick ass at Pirates (link)
#4. Read a book that has more intellect and social significance that the latest Janet Evanovich bestseller
#5. Cut back on weekly trips to Target-will be my greatest test of strength and willpower

Once i have accomplished these i feel i will be in a more confident and mature mind frame to tackle the bigger obstacles like getting a job and a new car and saving money and getting to the gym more and getting health care and finishing school. . . oh fuck-- sense of utter failure and doom is back -where's my box of cheez-itz?

Went to the capsules fair on sunday with Test Piggy and rico. was a really awesome sunny day in the city and sooo great to go to a craft fair that was completely void of paintings on saws and fairy garden signs. i got a couple of Ts By xthreadz yeah obviously they are guy designs but i lovered them too much to not get 'em.

ohhhhh michael michael michael. Was almost physically painful to watch the 80's vesace remix he sent down the runway. Oskar nailed it when she pointed out that he just did everything he had been given praise for during the season. Unfortunately he also infused it with a huge dose of tacky, tight and impratical.

This bathing suit made my crotch hurt just watching it. Sluttiest chastity belt i have ever seen.

Loved that Laura had the confidence to create a line of evening wear-designing exactly what she wanted without folding under the pressure to show new and different. She has her look, the execution and the silhouettes down. She spent the whole season making her aesthetic known to the fashion community and it will only pay off for her.

Uli was the runner up this season and I thought she had it in the bag once Laura was auf'ed. Her style comes through soo crisp and clear everytime. Out of them all I think she is going to have the most success in the fashion world.

EEEEEEgads Jeffrey won season 3 of Project Runway. I am just not feeling the judges decision on this one. I never realized how disappointing it is to not be excited about the who the winner would be. Aside from being overbudget (which fortunately got those austin power femme robot wigs cut) and crying like a baby, his collection just had too many "what the fuck was he thinking" outfits.

Oh magic was in the air on last nights episode of Project Runway.
The designers actually got along, Uli was making jokes that were funny and Tim was sashaying through the workroom with his usual good cheer and parental support of the designers. And the icing on the serendipity cake was that NONE of the last FOUR got kicked off. The jaded lil devil that sits on my shoulder believes that this is because bravo was going to shell out the money for all four to do a line so might as well get more air time out of it. but this lil imp also told me that it was okay to shoplift Kool aid when i was 9 so lets not listen to it anymore.

Woot Woot Uli gets a win.

Laura gets by with another pretty deep V dress.

As the most hetero male this show has seen, Michael struggles with the concept that the womens wants the boobies contained.

Beyond watching bad daytime tv and exercising like a fiend lately, I have found some other joys and delights to fill up my wasteland hours whilst sans job. Besides painting my magazine rack black, hanging a curtain rod to replace a row of pushpins and starting to make jewelry again I have just finished reading Family and other accidents by Shari Goldhagen (LINK) - i really liked it -easy read without being chick lit but i tend to go for family stories from the guy perspective because there are far far fewer lengthy paragraphs and 4-syllable adjetives about how stuff smells and the crispness of the air descriptive bullshit.
One of my favorite indulgences while being free during the work day is going to bookstores and reading books and mags for free. Grabbed an issue of Ready Made while piling up a load of house and design mags to browse through. yeah it is totally hipster but at least more informative than the latest Cosmo. (LINK)
Now it is time for some coffee ice cream and some bad nighttime tv. ;)

After but a moments respite from Vincent and Angela a horrible new twist brought these two crazies back onto the runway. All former challenge winners were allowed to come back and have a shot (GASP!) at staying if they won this challenge. Out of all that talent to reflect upon who was booted and to realize that the only other challange winners were these two. Them? really? huh. Lets let the black and white cocktail party begin. . .

AUUUUUUUUUUUFFFFFF! ohh Kayne I actually quite liked you dress. And that the back was totally unique however there just wasnt enough white to please the ambiguious criteria of the judges. Now go call up robert and have a playdate.

AUF DUEX! was there even a remote chance of Angela pulling of a win??? as likely as her not dressing like a fairy tale princess toddler.

Another one bites the dust. Oskar and i let out simultaneous gags when Vincent let another "it gets me off" fly -just go away already -you are not a designer and your model is not a hooker please get this straight already!

I know this is rather late but i was in vegas and prep for that just took over my whole thursday. The only truly memorable thing is that FINALLY no-talent angela got kicked auf. about freaking time.

One of the joys of not having a 9 to 5 anymore is indulgance in really bad cable tv at all hours. My latest favorite gem is on the oxygen network -Breaking Up with Shannon Dougherty. It is just sooo freakin awesome. It is like Cheaters and Jerry Springer and Punk'd all rolled into one. They set these lame boyfriends up to get the dirt on their true feelings and then she comes out and either dispenses the ultimatums or dumps their asses. Shannon is just bad ass and gorgeous enough that these guys are left stunned over getting caught lying and acting like juveniles. I just fuckin' love it! There really is nothing better on at 11 at night. My other new discovery is on the discovery channel and is called cash cab. A trivia show that takes place in a cab in New York where people get on looking for a taxi ride and end up winning cash. The best is that it is ALL sorts of new yorkers that you would never see on a regular game show. And really even if they get every answer wrong -they still got a free cab ride so EVERYONE is a winner ;)

I was laid off from my job on friday soo things are in a limbo at the moment. I took it fairly well since A) i hated that job and had nothing in common with my coworkers B) i was planning on looking for a new one in september anyways C) and most importantly the sudden afternoon off came me some much needed time to complete my final project that was sue on saturday (which i totally got an A on thank you very much)

Leaving for vegas on thurs means i am trying to take care of the small details like registering for unemployment, updating the resume etc. . . and making lots and lots of lunch dates with all my friends -ya know the importnat stuff to take care of when you have absolutely nothing to do all day long.
Wish me luck on my latest job hunt ;)

I squeeeeealed like a lil piggy when i saw Michael Kors mother!! I was enraptured by how alike they were. Forget the rest of the show i want a Michael and Mum show twice a week for the rest of my life where they just plan cocktail parties and what shade of fake tan to be that day and point at badly dressed celebs in fancy restaurants and giggle like schoolgirls behind their glasses of champagne.
Anyways onto the Runway but with this crew it was more like a ducks crossing the street. waddle waddle waddle.

Robert and (Vincent's sister) is OUT. Napfest season 3 is over.

Vincent WINNER for Uli's Mum -i loved IT! hmmm does this explain his craziness??? Needing a mother figure around to tell him what to do in order to succeed?

I think Jeffrey won asshat of the year award with his autrocious treatment of Angela's mother. Was like kicking a puppy dog. A rather chubby and gauche puppy dog but a puppy dog nonetheless. And by the way Jeffrey this sucked.

Michael for Robert's sister. Really awesome reversable shirt dress but no real stretch since she is pratically a model herself. No way it could have won if Robert was getting kicked off. Bravo isnt that good with irony.

Oooo Heidi is bringing out the whips and chains and ain't takin' no more bullshit. I loooove how she is giving the designers leaky bowels over how tough the challenges are going to get.

Alison gets thrown out like a bag of trash. Really wish she had stuck with her original colorful papers-think that would have gone over a whole lot better than having her look called a fat minnie mouse.

Micheal wins again. Is ok i spose.

I really loved this dress Laura made-compared to everyone elses this was sooo tailored and perfect-just shows how talented she is at structuring.
Did they outlaw alcohol along with fashion guides at the Atlas cuz Laura seriously needs a martini or twelve. The snarky little comments she throws at the others is really uncalled for. That being said the attack on Vincent was totally justified and deep down i believe motivated by her having to now share an apartment with one less buffer between her and Angela and the grief of Alison not being around to braid hair and do each others nails at 2 in the morning.

Oskar was rooting for Jeffrey to win this one. The fake belt was pretty great though-it really fit this outfit. I probably would have agreed if the entire thing was yellow and didnt have the blue added to the skirt just reminded my of a circus tent. Plus jeffrey is still a total asshole.

Vincent needs to be cut ala Keith style just for the way he says "Gets me off" hello??? GROSS!

There is NO WAY NINA let him crawl out of the hole he dug himself into when he immediately started making excuses about the materials he seleceted and how he threw it together at the last minute. I blame the procuders for editing. I really felt Kayne should have been out with this look.

Sad that this is a HUGE improvement over anything Robert has created lately

Angela -what i love is that you just KNOW she would come up with the exact same outfit given the most expensive materials to choice from. (anybody else getting Barbie and the Rockers flashbacks from this???)

I really like what Uli did with her materials. I think she was shafted by the judges for not recognizing her innovation here.

My Final rant on this episode:
I dont know what has gotten fucked with the editing but the shows are not nearly as well produced as they were last season. They have totally fucked Tim's inspiring "Make it Work" into a joke and the interactions between the designers is just shown as absolutely catty and stale.
